DSA Packages

The Direct Schools Admission (DSA) scheme was introduced in 2004, and has provided an alternative path for many, many students to develop their particular strengths. But how do you know if this is the right route for your child?

DSA is not: a shortcut to a desired school or an insurance policy; it can actually be counterproductive to motivate your child to “try hard for DSA so you don’t have to worry about PSLE.”

However, if your child has a specific talent or interest in specific areas, and you want them to develop these interests and skills, you may want to consider going this route.

English, Literary Arts, Humanities?

Sometimes it also feels like parents are a little more unsure what English Language, Humanities, or Literary Arts DSA might involve. These categories seem more alien compared to, say, Mathematics or sports DSA. If you want to enter a school via basketball, you have to be an outstanding player. But what about English Language DSA? Or Humanities DSA? Humanities subjects aren’t even taught in primary schools…

Firstly, I’d suggest making time to explore MOE’s DSA explainer pages. This one, for example, gives an overview of the different talent areas, while this page shows you the key months in which the different stages of the DSA application process takes place.

Second, and more importantly, find out the specific requirements of the schools you and your child have in mind. Every school has different procedures, and asks you to submit different things. Do find out this information early in the year, because some of the submissions requirements, e.g. portfolios, cannot be cobbled together at the last minute!

Is my child ready? Where can I find the help my child might need?

I’ve got you covered! Please try out the handy flow chart below.

I offer two “shorter” DSA preparation packages which are good for parents who:

  • know they will be able to coach their child, but want some feedback or an additional eye on the deliverables;

  • are confident their child has what it takes, but want to know how to position their child’s talent to bring out most clearly.

If you think your child would benefit from additional coaching, then I’d suggest hiring me on a weekly basis for regular coaching. Details are here.
